We have been a huge fan of Aldi for a while now with their increase of awesome on trend home decor and organic milk chocolate but haven’t really ‘shopped’ there for our weekly groceries.
So today the husband and I went grocery shopping together. We kind of meal planned. We aren’t the best at this part of our lives and are the first to admit it. We hate deciding on dinner and also like to eat what we feel like at the time. Makes for an expensive and frustrating week, full of back and forth ‘What do you feel like for dinner’ texts that start around midday each day.
But anyway today we sort of thought about it. I told him we had to duck to Aldi to get black garbage bags. They are the only place that sell these bags and I have to get them because the white ones or yellow ones at Coles and Woolies don’t match my bin! While we were there hubby suggested we try some of their items for our meals. Ok cool. Filled two bags for $42.08 and off we went to the next supermarket for the rest of our stuff.
The two oldest boys were making us insane so I gave them the receipt from Aldi and my phone and told them to go and find out the prices of the same things we had just bought, to keep them occupied and safe from me murdering them.
I thought there might be a couple of dollars saved but not as much as we did! The almost identical items cost $23 more! We priced all our items that we would normally buy(some cheaper than average brands, some more expensive)and the difference was pretty big. I cannot wait to do an actual shop and do a complete comparison on what we would save if we bought the majority at Aldi.
I imagine that if you bought all Coles or Woolies homebrand items then it would come pretty close but we don’t, so for us, to be able to save 1/3 of the money spent on groceries is pretty awesome.
The tomato medley was bought on sale for $2.99. Normal price $5. Competitor price-$6.98.
The nuttelex spread is 320g at Aldi and competitor size is 500g. $1.99 for 320g and $3.30 for 500g.
The Aldi Goats cheese is 113g for $3.99 and the Competitors brand name cheese 120g for $6.
The sizes and weights for all other products are the same.
Overall, we are pretty keen to test out some more products and see how much more we could save. So we will keep you updated!
How do you find shopping at Aldi V other supermarkets? We’d love to know!
