Childbirth is a glorious, disgusting process. You and your body are amazing. You push out that baby or head to theatre for a caesarean and then you sit back, look at that precious baby, smile and then bleed. And bleed and bleed and bleed. We have 4 children between us. That’s a lot of bleeding after birth. It sucks and it hangs around for ages. And just when you think it is gone, BOOM! It’s back. And usually when you are shopping or wearing white. The point is no matter what kind of pregnancy you have, what your labour is like, if you are tall or short, carry one baby or two, you will bleed after birth. And you need maternity pads. And lots of them. While we were reviewing Cottons maternity pads range, we both sat down to think about our very different birthing experiences. Here are part of our stories.
I can still remember how I felt the morning after Olivia was born. I hadn’t slept as I was too busy staring at her, I had broken capillaries all over my face from pushing so hard (she was out in 4 pushes), my neck was swollen and I felt like I had been hit by a bus. Sitting on the edge of the bed, walking or going to the bathroom was enough to induce throwing up. They tell you about the gorgeous baby you get when you give birth, but they don’t really highlight the physical aftermath. I sat in the hospital bathroom with a midwife waiting to show her what I thought were blood clots. Such a dignified way to learn they were not. Postpartum life is messy and painful.
I have had 3 babies. All via C section. I have a 21 month old, a nearly 9 year old and a nearly 13 year old. I was only 20 when we had our first son. Every single thing was new to me. I had no idea just how much one bled nor how many pads were required. My son was sick and we spend a month in Sydney Children’s Hospital. Wearing pads every day of our stay. I wish I had these pads back then. I think I can still hear me walking through the quiet halls to my baby with a giant pad scrunching while I walked! Those who have had sections know that you still bleed like a natural delivery, but you cannot move the same way. Toilet trips are not fun. They can be excruciating in the first few days. And your bleeding doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care if you are in pain and don’t want to get up. I remember changing as often as I was changing my babies bottoms In those early days. Because you know, we don’t already have enough to do, let’s make mum bleed constantly as well as she figures all this out! While also wearing ginormous undies that cover your scar and fit the pad in.
Cottons is a family business, established in 1995 in Melbourne, Australia. The feminine hygiene market in the early 90s in Australia, was dominated by synthetic products, with no “natural” choices so Cottons developed and introduced Australia’s first 100% cotton tampons. Fast-forward over 20 years and Cottons are still providing great quality natural feminine hygiene products, but now to over 15 different countries worldwide. Ranging from pads, tampons and liners, to maternity pads, nursing pads and incontinence products.
Just like the rest of the Cottons range, Cottons Maternity Pads are highly effective and made with a special 100% natural cotton coversheet. They were re-designed in conjunction with a leading Australian maternity hospital too, with comfort being their top priority. Cottons Maternity Pads are naturally hypo-allergenic, very absorbent and especially comfortable for post natal use. They make you feel confident that you can be supported day and night without leaks or discomfort. Not only are they great for postpartum bleeding, but they are perfect for your scar. Not too thick, adhere to the top of your undie line and protect your healing scar from your clothes in those first few days. Having a 100% cotton, more natural alternative on a fresh wound is a wiser option.
When you have a new baby to look after who wees and poops around the clock, swollen and sore milk filled boobs, a broken vagina or gutted abdomen, you’ve had 8 minutes sleep in 5 days, you want to be able to rely on your pad to keep you secure. You don’t want to be changing your pants in the parent rooms or leaking on your white sheets at night. That moment when baby has fallen asleep on you and you can’t move is awful when you feel like you need to change your pad. You can be confident that these pads are doing the job. Cottons Maternity pads tick all the boxes and are perfect for after baby and those first few periods back when it is heavier than usual.
It doesn’t matter how you got the baby into the room, giving birth is giving birth. All women need to feel secure and have a shred of confidence after performing such an incredible miracle.
Cottons insist on using only first grade cotton purified by the most environmentally friendly process that uses oxygen instead of harmful bleach. Cotton can also absorb up to five times its weight in moisture before it feels damp, which is why Cottons products work so well.
So. As you pack your hospital bag and prepare for the first few weeks at home, add Cottons Maternity pads to the list. They quite often go on special so you can stock up and you can find them at your local supermarkets and chemists.
