Remember shopping for your first baby?
I think about all the prep and research I did. How much money I spent on stuff that we never used ( I am STILL getting rid of her ridiculous amount of clothing ) The excitement of tiny baby things takes over and all of a sudden you are elbow deep in things you used once or not at all.
I sold or gave away every last item we had for Liv, so it was back to the drawing board for Baby Blue.
As we will be in our tiny house until the new house is built next year, I have had to be restrained and smart (and much more budget conscious ) in my purchases this time around.
If you are looking for items for your bub, here is my list – along with links – for you to gander at;
The very first item we purchased was this Retro 6 Drawer Unit from Fantastic Furniture. At $499.00 it was on the higher end of the price scale, but the quality is awesome. I looked around a lot and this was the best value for money for what we needed. I also wanted a unit that we could take to the new house with us that would last him for a long time.
I had my eye on this baby since the moment we found out we were having another child. The Mocka Aspiring Cot + Vale Mattress was a pretty awesome bargain at $289.90. It is so easy to assemble – Matt put it together in about 15 minutes.
Call me a snob, but I love Britax. All 4 seats that we now have are Britax ( 2 seats, 2 cars ) We got him the Safe N Sound Millenia Convertible Car Seat SICT ISOFIX from Baby + Toddler Town for $449.00.
I am so SO excited about our pram. We got the Comet Plus from BabyBee Prams and no, I didn’t buy two prams… I got TWO COLOUR PACKS. YES you can actually change the entire look of the pram without it costing you an arm and a leg. Check out the link above but at $599.00 it comes with the leather upgrades, a bassinet and mattress, reversible seat and much more. PLUS they are Australian made and owned.
CARRIER + WRAP
This time round I opted for ErgoBaby all the way. We got the Performance Ventus Carrier and Wrap both for $169.95 (total). There was some insane closing down sale at one of the baby shops so they did a good deal but I think they usually go for $209.95 and $129.95 each. I have no idea how to use a wrap so this will be an interesting learning experience. It feels nice and comfy and stretchy though.
Now I know that items like these bring out the debate, and fair enough, each parent has their own way of doing things. I have always been a co-sleeper. From the first moment Olivia opened her eyes in hospital, my instinct is that she needed to be with me. We didn’t have anything like this with her. We had months and months of trying to work out what was best for us and it led to many sleepless nights and exhausted arguments ( and poor Matt sleeping on the couch ) So after agonising for months, I finally purchased the Druva from Bubnest for $229.00. I already know we will use this all the time and it is another Australian made and owned company.
I had a Mimco Bag last time, but gave it away to my bestie when she got pregnant. So I went with the Mimco Splendiosa Baby Bag in blue. I would say out of all the items I bought, this seems like the most luxurious spend. At $299.00 it is the top end of the baby bag range but I used the last one every single day and aside from some marks on the padlock, it was in incredible condition. If your budget allows it and you want something big that will last for a very long time, check out Mimco for sure.
WRAPS + TOWEL
I remember being given a million wraps with Liv and I ended up searching for the perfect one as we wrapped her up like a football. I found the bigger the better worked for us. We got his hooded towel + jersey stretch wraps from Little Turtle Baby. The wraps are huge – about 1M x 1M and the towel is double layer thick so perfect for wrapping him up – starting from $29.95. I also got some lighter wraps from Kip + Co which are 1.1M x 1.1M and are deliciously light – $59.00 for a set of two.
I know. $99.00 is a little steep for a cot quilt but LOOK AT HOW GORGEOUS this print is. Another Kip + Co find, that matches the wraps I bought – it is actually sold out now so I am glad I hunted it down when I did.
Liv chose the Finding Nemo bath from Toys R Us. Currently on special for $29.94. I love that it comes with a mesh inlay. We had two baby baths with Liv and for some unknown reason, I never got one with an inlay. We ended up with several different types of bath chairs though (oh the wasted money).
My last purchase was a gorgeous handmade playmat from Jhett + Co. I got the grey quilted mat with the toys. It was $200.00 and worth every cent. Its MASSIVE and all handmade by a small Australian business. Because the base is so thick and the top part is removable, it will be so easy to take along wherever we want to go.
Fisher Price is another favourite of mine. I picked up the Comfort Curve Bounce from Target for $55.20 – it is still on special at the moment. Liv helped me put it together and has tried to sit in it many times.
So that’s my list!!!
Hopefully it helps if you are looking for baby items or gift ideas!
As a side bar – due to paying rent, mortgage and every other expense, it made sense for me to use Afterpay where I could. I budgeted each week and made sure not all my payments came out on the same day. Shops that had it available are: Mocka, Baby + Toddler Town, BabyBee Prams, Bubsnest, Mimco, Babies R Us, Kip + Co and Jhett + Co.
So it took longer to get each item but it means that cash flow and budgets weren’t hindered too much!
